Equality, diversity, and inclusiveness are in our core values, supporting our community’s wellbeing, creativity, and innovation. As part of our strategy, Aalto University Ways of Working define our mindset to collaboration: ‘Diversity is part of who we are, and we foster an empowered community that shines by working together’. This leads to better research, education, and impact – better us.
We actively work towards providing an inclusive and accessible environment for our employees and students with diverse backgrounds. During the 2022–2024 period, we focus on the following areas:
- Building EDI capabilities (awareness, psychological safety and inclusive community)
- Fostering inclusive learning experiences
- Developing equal people processes & practices
- Strengthening a data-driven operating model
- Promoting accessibility & barrier-free environments
University forums for EDI development
Aalto University Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee is lead by Provost Kristiina Mäkelä. Besides the chair and secretary, the committee includes six development managers or equivalent (one from each school), representatives of student union, faculty members and representatives of different services such as HR, communications and legal. The committee decides on needed actions and their implementation in schools and at the university level and outlines the EDI plan for a three-year period. It reviews activities, monitors action plans and communicates on EDI matters in the Aalto community.
University Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Task Force supports implementation of agreed activities and brings to discussion feedback and identified new development needs. The members of the Task Force are CHRO, Head of People & Organisation Development, and EDI Officer. The Task Force oversees the alignment of the EDI priorities and strategic roadmap.
Aalto University’s accessibility work is coordinated by a working group that was formed to improve co-operation across the domains. The group also monitors the development of national and EU legislation and ensures that changes are taken into account in Aalto University’s operations.
School EDI Committees / Task Forces
Each Aalto University school has an EDI Task Force or equivalent body, led by the Development Manager or equivalent. The task forces prepare the schools' EDI action plans and are responsible for implementation and follow-up of equality, diversity and inclusion matters at the school level.
