Pettiina Niiranen, a 3rd year student, found a job right after her exchange semester and is working as a Communications Trainee at the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

“I developed a general interest towards communications and environmental issues during my studies in Mikkeli. One of the main goals of the Ministry of Transport and Communications is to develop the transport sector into a more environmentally sustainable direction and make sure this change is communicated effectively to the public. This type of work is very aligned with my own career-related interests. Being in charge of communications in the student board and directing my studies towards sustainability and environmental responsibility equipped me with relevant expertise for this traineeship.

My job description includes varied tasks in both external and internal communications with special focus on social media and video production. I also run media analysis and reporting on a weekly basis. I have gained a lot of knowledge about the work of governmental organizations in Finland and developed skills in content creation, social media, and climate and environment related communications in the transport sector during my traineeship. Working with themes like emission mitigation, smart transport systems and Mobility as a Service (Maas) has given me valuable insights in sustainable development in the transport sector, which will definitely help me as I move on to study Creative Sustainability at master’s level.”

Also a 3rd year student Julia Reponen shares her experiencers of working before graduation. She works as an Innovation & Growth Trainee at Ghost.

"Throughout my studies, my main interests have been innovation and business development. During my time in Mikkeli, I completed courses in innovation management and strategic management for international ventures and continued with the same theme during my exchange in China, where I completed courses in the major of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. During the courses, I gained valuable theoretic skills, as well as some practicalities to be considered when developing a business.

I was lucky to land a job as a Growth & Innovation Trainee at Ghost right after my exchange, as Ghost is a consulting firm focusing on growth strategies through account management and service innovations. We are a tiny firm, so I get to do pretty much everything from analysis and marketing to workshops and interviewing clients, and the variety is very much the biggest perk of my job. Already during the first few months I have learned a lot, especially from our client projects.

Studying in the BScBA Program has aided in my work, as project-based work requires: efficiency, the ability to understand and see the relevant things quickly, as well as good communication and presenting skills. Moreover, my experiences from student organizations and volunteering have taught me creativity and taking initiative, which is useful when planning events and workshops.”
